Radica’s Cube World™ is a series of small Tamagotchi style toys that were sold between 2005 and 2009.
Each cube has magnets on four sides to connect the cubes together, and screens on the front where you can interact with a “stick man” who lives inside the cube, as well as three buttons under the screen to control the cube.
Each stick man has over 100 animations, based on a certain theme. There are musicians, sports players, dog owners, fitness freaks, even a mad scientist!
Animations
You can tumble the stick man around his home by tilting the cube. You can play games with him by pressing buttons below the screen. If you leave the little guy alone, he will amuse himself with whatever toy he owns, or work at his job if he has one. Each cube has over 100 animations.
If you connect two or more cubes together (via built in magnets), the stick men will leave their own cubes and cross over into the other cubes to visit their neighbors. Sometimes they play together, sometimes prank each other, and often times fights will break out. Eventually they will return to their own cubes (or instantly teleport back if you physically separate them).
Cubes can be connected in any pattern like building blocks. A cube can hold a maximum of four stick men. Connecting four cubes in a straight vertical or horizontal row will trigger a special animation.
Eventually, if left alone, they will fall asleep and the cube will shut off.
Buttons
There are three buttons on the front of the cube. The left button turns the sound on and off. The middle button is the main on/off button, and also controls the game functions. The right button shows the game’s high score.
Games
Each stick man has his own unique game he can play.
To start a game, with the unit on, press the middle button to start Game Mode. Press the middle button again while ‘GAME’ is flashing to start the game. The middle button will also let you control your stick man.
The games are very simple, and are based on timing. You have to press the middle button at just the right time to trigger an action.
Examples
Dusty is holding a can of bug spray as the game starts, and a bug flies in from the right side of the screen. If you press the button too early, the bug sees the mist and flies away. If you press it just after the bug flies over his head, you will spray the bug and get a point. If you wait too long, the bug flies away.
When you spray a bug, be ready, because the next bug comes in about one second later.
Handy holds a mallet and plays a Whack-A-Mole game. The mole always pops up in the same spot. The way to score on this game is to hit that middle button just the INSTANT you see the mole starting to emerge. If you wait until he is all the way up you will miss him.
High Scores
When the game is over, your high score will be displayed. You can also see your high score when you are outside of game mode, by hitting the right button.
Troubleshooting
Usually if the cube is acting up, it means that it needs a fresh battery. The cube uses one CR2032 button battery. The battery is accessed by unscrewing a small screw on the back of the cube.
(I have found two-packs of these batteries at the dollar store, but they were cheap, and didn’t last long. Amazon sells some high quality Sony lithium batteries which last forever and are much cheaper in the long run.)
There is also a reset button on the back of the cube that can be useful if your cube man locks up or malfunctions. (Accidentally zapping the cube with a static electricity shock can cause this.) You will need something pointy, like a paper clip or a sharp pencil to reach that button if you need it. Also, if the cube doesn’t come back on after replacing the battery, try pressing this reset button.
In Dusty’s game “Buzz Off”, press the middle button as the bugs fly overhead to spray them with insect spray.
Each Series 5 cube contains a “Mod”, an additional themed toy that connects to the cube, and triggers addition animations and sounds. The Mods have a single “On” button that also toggles the sound on and off.
These are jumbo cubes, as large as four regular cubes put together. Four cubes can attach to it, one to each side.
Buttons – the three buttons function the same way as a regular Cube World cube, with the addition of the left and right buttons providing “move left” and “move right”, while the middle button works as Jump or Catch.
Block Bash
Trash Dash game
Help Alley catch items dropped from a balcony. The longer she catches them, the faster the game gets, and the more the items are worth! If a rat runs across the street, Alley should jump over it. Jumping over one rat scores 1000 points plus unlocks an animation. Jumping over two more rats unlocks a second animation. There are a total of 21 animations which can be unlocked in this way. (When a new animation is unlocked, a lock and key appears at the top of the screen.) When the game is over it will display how many of the 21 animations you have unlocked.
Global Getaway
Help Trip jump over coconuts that roll down trees. Sometimes a monkey will throw a banana at you – if you move, jump and catch it you can unlock up to 21 animations. Catching one banana unlocks the first animation. To unlock the second, you will have to catch two more, etc. And the end of the game it will tell you how many total animations you have unlocked.
